The Smokies Are About to Get Loud (and Delicious): What's Happening May 13–17 in Pigeon Forge

Posted by Tanya | Simple Bear Necessities | Bear Cove Falls Resort, Pigeon Forge, TN

If you've been waiting for the perfect excuse to finally book that Smoky Mountain trip, this is it. The next two weeks are stacking up to be one of the best stretches of spring in the Smokies — and Simple Bear Necessities is sitting right in the middle of all of it.

Here's what's happening, why it matters, and how to make the most of every single day.

🌸 Dollywood's Flower & Food Festival — Running Now Through June

Dollywood doesn't do anything halfway, and their Flower & Food Festival (presented by Covenant Health) is proof. Hundreds of thousands of blooms are in full display across the park, with larger-than-life floral sculptures, live entertainment, and a rotating lineup of seasonal food and drink that would make any foodie weep happy tears.

This is hands-down one of the most beautiful times to visit Dollywood — and with Simple Bear Necessities just 2.2 miles from the park entrance, you can be back in the hot tub before the parking lot empties.

Pro tip: Weekday mornings are the sweet spot for smaller crowds and easier parking. Sleep in a little, grab a coffee from the Keurig, and head over mid-morning. The blooms hit differently in the golden hour light.

🎵 Bloomin' BBQ & Bluegrass Festival — May 15 & 16 | Sevierville, TN

Just a short drive up the road in Sevierville, the Bloomin' BBQ & Bluegrass Festival brings together everything Tennessee does best: slow-smoked meats, cold drinks, and live bluegrass music that makes you want to pull up a lawn chair and never leave.

This is a free, outdoor festival and one of the most underrated events in the region. It's the kind of thing locals love and visitors stumble upon and immediately ask, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?"

Now you do.

Distance from Simple Bear Necessities: About 8 miles — an easy drive with no mountain roads to navigate.

💦 Dollywood's Splash Country Opens — May 16

Mark it. Circle it. Set three alarms.

Dollywood's Splash Country opens for the 2026 season on May 16 — and opening weekend is always a celebration. The waterpark features slides, wave pools, and lazy river action that's perfect for families who've spent the morning at the Flower & Food Festival and need to cool off in the afternoon.

Bonus: You're staying in a cabin that already has a private hot tub waiting for you at the end of the day. Waterpark by afternoon, hot tub by evening. That's a full day done right.

🏡 Why Simple Bear Necessities Is the Perfect Home Base

We didn't just get lucky with our location — we specifically chose it because it puts guests close to everything without the hassle of steep mountain roads or long detours.

Here's what that looks like in practice this weekend:

  • Dollywood Flower & Food Festival — 2.2 miles
  • Dollywood Splash Country — minutes from the same entrance
  • Bloomin' BBQ & Bluegrass (Sevierville) — ~8 miles
  • The Parkway — less than 1 mile
  • Pizza at the Cove & Old Mountain Market — steps from the front door (grab snacks before you go!)

And when you're back at the cabin? Four bedrooms, three king beds, a Pac-Man arcade, air hockey table, Nerf battle wall, Nintendo Switch, and a private hot tub. There's genuinely no reason to be bored.

🐾 Bringing the Dog?

We're pet-friendly (up to 2 dogs, 50 lbs or less with pet fee), which means your four-legged family member doesn't have to sit this one out. Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge has a great walking loop along the river, and the Riverwalk Trail connects all the way to The Island — both perfect for a morning walk before the day's events.
