Best Things to Do Near Dollywood (That Aren't Dollywood)

Posted by Tanya | Simple Bear Necessities | Pigeon Forge, TN

Let's be honest — Dollywood is incredible. But even the biggest theme park fans need a day off from the rides. Whether you're looking to save a little money, give the kids a change of scenery, or simply explore the stunning area surrounding our cabin, Pigeon Forge and the Smoky Mountains have more to offer than most visitors ever discover.

As a local host who has been vacationing in Pigeon Forge for years before putting down roots here, I've put together my personal list of the best things to do near Dollywood that have nothing to do with Dolly's park. These are the places my own family loves — and the spots our guests rave about when they check out.

1. Great Smoky Mountains National Park — 11 Miles Away

The most visited national park in the United States sits practically in your backyard when you stay with us. With over 800 miles of hiking trails, cascading waterfalls, and some of the best wildlife viewing on the East Coast, the park offers something for every member of the family — including your dogs, who are welcome on two designated pet-friendly trails: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail.

Pro tip: Go early. The park's most popular areas fill up fast in summer and fall. Aim for a 7:00 AM arrival if you're heading to Clingmans Dome or Laurel Falls.

Best for: Hikers, nature lovers, families with pets, photographers chasing fall foliage.

2. The Island in Pigeon Forge — 2.5 Miles Away

Think of The Island as Pigeon Forge's town square — if your town square had a 200-foot observation wheel, a dancing fountain show, live bluegrass music, and more restaurants than you could visit in a week. It's completely free to walk around, and leashed dogs are welcome throughout the outdoor areas.

Our personal favorite stop here: Paula Deen's Family Kitchen, where the all-you-can-eat Southern family-style meals are legendary. The views overlooking the fountain from the upstairs dining room make it even better.

Best for: Evenings out, families with young kids, people who want to skip the theme park admission but still have a great time.

3. Dolly Parton's Stampede Dinner Show — 1 Mile Away

Okay, this one is technically Dolly-adjacent, but it has nothing to do with the theme park. The Stampede is one of the most popular dinner shows in the country for good reason — 32 horses, trick riders, racing, and a four-course Southern feast, all under one massive roof. It runs year-round and is a legitimately spectacular evening out for families.

At just 1 mile from our cabin, it's one of the closest major attractions to Simple Bear Necessities.

Best for: A memorable family dinner and show experience. Book in advance — it sells out frequently.

4. Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud

The legendary mountain family rivalry comes to life in this hilarious, high-energy dinner show that guests of all ages enjoy. You'll be assigned to a "side" when you arrive, then spend the evening cheering on your family through comedy, stunts, and plenty of good Southern cooking. It's one of the funniest nights out in Pigeon Forge.

Best for: Groups looking for an interactive, laugh-out-loud evening.

5. Anakeesta in Gatlinburg — 7.8 Miles Away

Ride the gondola up to this mountaintop park in downtown Gatlinburg for something genuinely breathtaking. The 14-bridge Treetop Skywalk puts you 50–60 feet in the air among the tree canopy with views that stretch toward Kentucky on a clear day. The AnaVista Tower gives you a full 360-degree panorama of the Smoky Mountains.

It's a completely different kind of experience from a theme park — slower, more beautiful, and deeply memorable. The Vista Gardens alone are worth the trip.

Best for: Couples, families who love scenic experiences, anyone who wants a jaw-dropping view without hiking to get it.

6. Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies — Gatlinburg

One of the top-rated aquariums in the entire country, and it's less than 30 minutes from our front door. The walk-through shark tunnel is worth the price of admission alone — you'll have sharks, rays, and sea turtles gliding right over your head. There's also a touch pool, penguin encounters, and interactive exhibits throughout.

Best for: Young kids, rainy days, anyone who wants an unforgettable indoor attraction.

7. WonderWorks Pigeon Forge

From the outside, it looks like a building that somehow got flipped upside down — and the inside is just as wild. With over 100 hands-on exhibits, an indoor ropes course, laser tag, and a glow-in-the-dark experience, WonderWorks is a perfect option for families with kids who need to burn energy. It's a full day of activity at a fraction of the cost of a theme park.

Best for: Kids ages 5–14, rainy days, families looking for budget-friendly fun.

8. Old Mill Square in Pigeon Forge

Just a short drive from our cabin, Old Mill Square is a charming collection of shops, restaurants, and a working gristmill that's been grinding corn and grains since 1830. Stop in for breakfast or lunch at The Old Mill Restaurant — a Pigeon Forge institution with hearty Southern comfort food served overlooking the Little Pigeon River. Then browse the shops for stone-ground grits, local jams, and handmade pottery to bring home.

It's the kind of place that reminds you there's real history and culture woven into this area beyond the attractions.

Best for: A relaxed morning or afternoon, foodies, shoppers, and anyone who appreciates local history.

9. Forbidden Caverns — Sevierville

If you want to get completely off the beaten path (literally underground), Forbidden Caverns in nearby Sevierville is one of the most unique experiences in the Smokies. A guided tour takes you past sparkling cave formations, underground streams, and towering natural chimneys in a cavern that stays at a cool 58°F year-round — a welcome escape on a hot summer day.

Best for: A truly different kind of adventure. Great for older kids and adults.

10. Comedy Barn Theater

For a night of pure, side-splitting family fun, the Comedy Barn delivers every time. This Pigeon Forge staple features clean comedy, live music, ventriloquism, and audience participation that has guests of all ages crying laughing. There's a reason it's been a Smoky Mountain tradition for decades.

Best for: A fun, affordable evening out that's guaranteed to put everyone in a great mood.

A Note on Getting Around

One thing our guests always appreciate about staying at Simple Bear Necessities: our location makes all of this incredibly easy to access. We're less than 1 mile from The Parkway — Pigeon Forge's main corridor — with no steep mountain roads between you and everything listed above. Whether you're driving to the national park or heading to a dinner show, you'll spend less time navigating and more time enjoying your vacation.
